In 1983 the film Bearn or La sala de las muñecas, a film based on the novel by the Mallorcan writer Llorenç Villalonga, was released. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary, on 1 June 2023, a free event with prior registration will be held with a talk by the film’s director, Jaime Chávarri, and a screening of the film.
The Jardines de Alfàbia, in Bunyola, will be the venue for the event, with bar service and musical entertainment by the band Lost in Translation. It will return at 23:00 hours.
In Bearn, a historical film production with a budget of 600,000 euros (around 100 million pesetas), which was very high for the time in Spanish cinema, the script, the setting, and also the locations, among which the beauty of the Raixa estate and the impressive Alfabia Gardens, both in Bunyola, were taken care of down to the last detail.
In the film, Jaime Chávarri wanted to make an X-ray of the slow decadence of the Mallorcan aristocracy in the mid-19th century. To do so, he counted on artists of the stature of Fernando Rey, Imanol Arias, Ángela Molina and Amparo Soler Leal. Big stars of the decade on both the national and international scene.
The film director, born in Madrid in 1943, graduated in Law and studied at the Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía (EOC), from which he was expelled accused of belonging to the leftist exaltation movement. In his beginnings in the film industry, he was assistant director to Francisco Regueiro in Me enveneno de azules (1969), co-writer of Un, dos, tres… al escondite inglés (1969), set designer and director of television programmes.
